What is the point of escorted convoys through roadworks?
I have come across these in Herefordshire, but I saw one today near home (North Yorkshire).
The roadworks were controlled by traffic lights, but we had to wait for a convoy vehicle to take us through. In my opinion it was a complete waste of time and it must cost a fortune for them to pay a workman to guide traffic through the roadworks.

It's to protect the workers on the site - the convoy only moves when personnel are clear of the roadway.

It is to keep the convoy vehicle driver in work, otherwise traffic lights are fine, as far as I can see.

Health and safety. Without the escort how many people would race through as they have had to sit for a few minutes?

Hi Albags. Yes I live about 2-3 miles from Church Fenton which is still used by the RAF but not as an operational base, and I understand it is due to close completely in the near future.
