outskirts of london parking

traveling down from hartepool on saturday june 4th so im looking for areas to park on the outskirts of london with either fast train or tube into centre of london.thanx

A friend of mine lives in the East Midlands and whenever he goes into London he parks at Cockfosters Tube Station and gets the Tube in (20 minutes I think) I am sure he said parking was around £1.50 a day.

There's a big car park opposire Regent's Park Zoo, and it's then about five minutes cab ride into town.

I was going to suggest the same as Emeritus, although if it's a week day I imagine the car park may be full way before rush hour.

JJ, I think you can only park there for 4 hours max.

I would also suggest Cockfosters. It's about five minutes from the M25. Go any further in and you'll hit the London traffic. Forget Regents Park unless you want to add another hour onto your journey and, depending on how you get there, you'll have to pay the £10 daily congestion charge. Once you're on the Piccadilly line you'll be at Covent Garden / Leicester Square in less than half an hour.

The other 'tube' option is Stanmore at the end of the Jubilee line. Its just off J4 of the M1 (follow the slip off the m-way onto the A41 dual c'way. Next r'about turn right, next r'about straight over. Station and car park are about 1/2 mile on your left...less than 5 mins from M-way). I use Stanmore as I 'know it'.

While I'll agree that driving into the centre of London (particularly anywhere near to Regents Park) would be very unwise, the questioner certainly wouldn't have to pay the Congestion Charge as it doesn't apply on Saturdays.

after all this and i appreciate all your feedback which will be future reference we have now decided to travel down on the overnight coach to victoria station,so any ideas on places to take the wife and see during the day before we head onto wembley for the match.also meeting up with the daughter whos living in hampshire,i normally come down with the lads on the train and we get as far as kings x and the globe on baker street on the drink so would like to see a bit more of london this time.

I'll start by providing some times for anyone else who might be posting here:
The overnight coach arrives at Victoria at 0550.
The England v Switzerland match kicks off at 1645.

Here's a possible itinerary for you:
Stroll up to Victoria Station, to get a coffee (at Caffé Nero or Starbucks) while you wait for the Wetherspoon's pub to open at 7am. It's up on the 1st floor, and you should be able to get a decent breakfast there)

Then buy One Day Travelcards at the Underground station. Make sure that you buy the '4 Zone' version (£7.30) as you'll need it to travel out to Wembley.

Take an eastbound tube(Circle or District Line) to Tower Hill. Take some photos (if you want) of the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. Then go to the Tower Millennium Pier to await the 0912 westbound riverbus to the London Eye Pier. (The timetable is here:

That's an excellent (and cheap) way to see many of the sights of London. Remember to show your Travelcards when you buy your boat tickets, as you'll get one third off.

Then, having booked in advance(!), you'll be at the London Eye when it opens at 10am. After enjoying the London Eye experience, walk along the bank of the Thames (with the river on your left) to the footbridge which takes you across the river to Embankment. As you come off the bridge, keep walking in the same direction, which will take you up alongside Charing Cross Station to Trafalgar Square. Perhaps some more photographs there (or even visit the National Gallery or the National Portrait Gallery - they're both free) before walking up the road to see the street entertainers in Covent Garden.

dont do too much walking you will be shattered before the match starts ! hope you have a great day.Agree with Chris that Weatherspoons early breakfast is good, remember if you want to go to the loo in London and you cant see one head for Macdonalds and use theirs.
