GB on plate

IF a car has GB on it's license plate does it mean that the car has been driven abroad?

Having number plates which which display both the Euro symbol and the 'GB' letters (in accordance with the regulations relating to size, etc) exempts the driver from having to display a separate GB sticker when driving abroad. So it makes sense for all cars to carry such plates, in order to make things easier if the motorist wants to travel abroad.

So many new cars are sold with such plates as standard, irrespective of whether the vehicle will ever actually be used abroad.

Number plates with GB on them simply conform EU rules and GB is the only EU recognised country identifier in the UK

Other are allowed in the UK (such as UK, ENG, SCO, CYM) but they are not recognised in the rest of the EU and any vehicle with the alternatives must show a separate GB sticker when driven in the EU.

To add to Buenchico's comment, I have been lead to believe that the GB / Euro symbol is only valid when driving within the EU. If venturing outside the EU then you need the big GB sticker regardless of whether or not you have one of those swanky new number plates. Few people heading to Verbier for the skiing take any notice, but then again few people heading to France packed a high viz jacket either and nearly ended up in Le Bastille as a result.
