volvo v40 servo/ brake pump

there is a pump which stays on even when the car is swiched off but when you pump the brake pedal a couple of times it goes off can you assist me in what may be wrong

Does your car have ABS? Some cars have a pump that can be heard after starting the engine or switching it off. Some cars have a seperate system to the normal braking system and this maybe the case with the Volvo. Does your owners manual mention anything?

Also, does your Volvo have a turbo/intercooler? Again, on certain cars a fan continues running after the engine has been switched off. This can last up to 1 minute.
