motobilty new car change-over

my mum's new car is delayed and they said they'll ring us as soon as it's ready. My husband says not to fill the car with petrol as she'll lose it when she swaps over.
She doesn't want to drive around around, topping up every day with tiddly bits of petrol.
Is he right? Or do they buy whatever's in your tank off you?

does it matter? If she's about to get what is basically a free car, how bad would it be to lose half a tank? When they ring, why not tell them "I won't be able to take it till Friday" and spend the meantime rushing round places she needs to go?

No they wont give you anything for the petrol.

Not quite right jno, this is paid for by the disabled living allowance that one would normally get when disabled.

It IS her disablilty allowance. It's one or the other - you don't get both.
She does struggle without the cash but she couldn't get around at all without the car. It's her only bit of independence.

that's what I'm saying - it's government money so it's free to her. (I'm paying, and happy to do so.) Anyway, Ratter's given you the answer and I've given you a suggestion about delaying pick-up until your tank is empty.

I'm not actually fussed either way, and I'm perfectly happy that my taxes go to people on benefits who need them. I was just pointing out that she's getting a free (to her) car, and hoping the government will also pay her for petrol she hasn't used is a bit unreasonable. But my suggestion about delaying acceptance stands.

how much fuel does she use in a day? can she not put a tenners worth in as and when she needs to?

You could ask the supplier to make sure that the new car is filled up. Sometimes, dealers put a minimal amount in to get you off the forecourt!

she wasn't asking for free petrol! Just an exchange for the petrol she'd bought. (with what's left of her benefit, that she's entitled to because she has always worked all her life until being unable to do so due to:
cardiomyopia
emphasema
stage 4 kidney disease
diabetes
3 mini strokes
1 mild heart attack
and a pace maker fitted.
