After disconnecting the battery for any reason I presume an ecu [engine electronic control unit] goes back to it's default settings. Does the ecu subsequently re-teach itself any parameters once the engine runs up to temperature or the vehicle is driven?

Motronic .. for instance has base pre-programmed map and will only adjust manually.
EOBD 4 /5: Most learn. There is an optimum teaching cycle (that can be found in Tech Workshop manual for that engine) Like driving .. idling 3 mins .. switch on A/C and idle 3 mins .. drive ... park and run at 3000rpm for 1 minute ... etc.

Most of learning stabilises idle and A/C idle speed and precise/cylinder fuel mapping.
as a bodyshop we are always disconnecting batteries (for welding purposes) on a variety of vehicles , this includes BMWS & Mercs, the only issues we have is loss of radio code.
Once the battery is re-connected the vehicle is driveable.
