How reliable are the Alpha 156?

Having read loads of reviews about this model It would seem that the electrics are tempramental, the build quality is patchy, the ride is fairly hard and that Alfa Romeo dealers are quite unwilling to offer help/advice.
If I was to follow my heart I would go out and buy one tomorrow, I think they are beautiful cars, designed with real Italian flair and much more stylish than its German competitors. But if I was to follow my head, I would rather opt for something that has a good track record in both reliability and build quality, something like a BMW.
Obviously, not all Alfa's would have problems, the later models have probably since improved. But in saying that, buying any car could be like 'a lucky dip' in terms of reliability. My advise would be to take a qualified mechanic with you if you were to buy one, it would be a small price to pay for peace of mind.
Hi.
My son has had a 156 for two years now (51 plate) and no problems whatsoever, just a small thing to remember a change of the cam belt works out at 700-800 pounds at an Alfa garage so IF you are going to buy second hand maybe worth taking this into consideration, they are comfortable great looking cars and reliable, repairs maybe a little expensive, but hey you only live once,
Enjoy.
