My laptop is barely 2 years old, and its now making a whirring noise, which is barable(unsure spelling) in a wi-fi bar, but a lot noisier at home when watching as film.
should i expect a costly repair?

given that the noisy fan may be noisy because its working over time, and is probably clogged...adding a silent extra fan would make it have to work less hard and cannot damage the laptop at all...understand?
deal with the cause not the symptom.

The fan on a modern laptop is temperature-controlled, just like the cooling fan in a car. It will only come on when the temperature rises to a set point. If you ensure decent airflow round the heatsink, as per my earlier suggestion, it may not come on at all.

yes rojash i know that...thats why a raised stand with a silent fan to allow airflow and also blow cool air onto it might help the laptop fan not need to come on at all or at least not very often...!
thereby stopping the noise and stopping it overheating...
sorry, not sure of any other way i can say it to make it clearer to you...
