Am I the Only One
26 Answers
Who drives at or below the speed limit? Just from reading JoggerJaynes post below, the debate about increasing the speed limit and the amount of people I've met who seem to get annoyed about speed cameras; it seems like I'm the only one who doesn't speed. SO is it just me or is there abyone else out there who will admit to sticking to the limit?

With me; if I was speeding and had an accident; even if it was the other drivers fault, I would feel bad because perhaps the few seconds later I would have arrived had I been travelling at the speed limit would have made a difference.
There's also the well-known point that nine out of ten pedestrians survive being hit by a vehicle at 30mph. At 40 mph nine out of ten are killed. At 35 mph half are killed. So someone driving at just 5mph over the 30mph speed limit is five times more likely to kill someone if they step or run in front of them.
A driver travelling at 30mph also stands more chance of avoiding a pedestrian stepping out than someone going just that bit faster. Of course, if a pedestrian was hit by those people who reckon there's nothing wrong with speeding they would then maintain it wasn't their fault and "I couldn't miss 'em" or words to that effect.
As the signs say, it's 30mph for a reason. Someone driving at 35 or 40 just gets to the next junction, roundabout or set of lights quicker.

i have a mate who speeds and sounds a bit like your friend sophie...i was with her in a (sports) car for 5 hours and she thought she was being so cool, with comments like 'well i havent crashed so whats the harm'...seeming to forget the numerous times she has crashed (and tried to blame others)
however to me she just seemed like an idiot...constanly having to slam on, stop mid manouvre etc because she was trying to drive above her capabilities
i lost a lot of respect for her and now dont see her as often as i used to...

I often have to drive in Southend on sea. The speed limit on the main seafront road has been lowered from 30mph to 20mph. The morons on the local council have also designated the section a 'shared space': no kerbs; park on the pavement area; step out in front of cars when you like, etc. Try sticking to 20mph when the following cars can see nothing immediately in front of you and they often overtake doing about 40mph. Still, it will be okay when they install the proposed average speed cameras on the section. Probably recover the cost in a month with the fines.
I stick to the speed limit on residential streets, not so much on motorways. I find the number of cars that hurtle up behind me and stick to my back bumper is increasing, the poor driver is often to be seen leaning against the window holding their forehead because I'm daring to drive as I should be and holding them up.
