Indicating at rouundabouts.

Through this medium I m hoping to reach  those motorists who do not give any signals at roundabouts.

Please, please signal your intentions. It enables other motorists to move onto the roundabout if you are taking the first exit or wait until you have passed. The most annoying and dangerous motorist is the one who goes 360 degrees at speed before leaving. So please signal before entering and just before  your intended exit.

There are several misconceptions about roundabouts.  One is signalling right when going straight ahead (?) and another is turning right and only using the left lane.  The Highway Code does contain a few things that we could disagree with, but at least it could get us all using the same rules.

Just last night I had a fool signal right so I stopped to let him go round and he carried on straight on.  We loose around 4 secconds of our lives whenever this happens, meanwhile it causes a traffic jam a half mile away for 'no apparent reason'.

Agree with the comment about the Highway Code.  If motorists were to follow that then there would be much less aggravation.  What really annoys me is where the Local Authority comes along and paints lane markings all over the place with no apparent regard for the Highway Code.   "Mini-roundabouts" which are just a splash of paint in the middle of a junction are equally confusing, especially when they just seem to appear overnight in some cases.

Grunty, Although there is no need to indicate right when entering a roundabout if intending to go straight ahead, it does let drivers waiting at the first exit know that you will be crossing their path. Using the L/H lane when turning 90 degrees right is definitely wrong in my book.

ianess, Why should mini-roundabouts cause confusion, there are simply scaled down versions of normal roundabouts, the same rules apply. Quite frankly, it annoys me when people hesitate and seem to forget the rules when coming to a mini-roundabout equally as much as when someone dosn't signal.

totaly agree with original post and as a trucker may i also add the mindless idiots who do not respect large vehicles when they are turning or negotiating roundabouts the number of pratts i see trying to squeeze up the side of my trailer whilst turning thank god i use my mirrors or there would be a few less of these pratts on the road by now

Yes it's a pain in the butt. Same as the drivers who think that the indicator is a function of steering i.e. they only indicate when maneouvring. Don't they realise a signal is a statement of intent not to show the fact that they're actualy turning, I can see that for myself.

Thanks for a great set of answers lads and lassies. And having been a trucker myself many years ago I know exactly what you mean, cockneyexile. It would do all motorists good to drive a truck and ride a motorbike for a few weeks every year !

derekpara - perhaps you drive a large vehicle that has to stick its nose into the first junction in order to get the rear wheels round, in which case I agree with you.  Otherwise it can cause problems to following drivers.  My collection of Highway Codes goes back to 1934, and none advise giving that signal.  I believe this reinforces my comment on the Highway Code.

Just to say that you would fail your driving test for indicating right and then going straight on, even if it is to let the people know you are crossing their path.
Secondly, according to my driving instructor, there is no requirement to indicate at all on mini roundabouts.

Dooesn't the Highway Code say that if you are in the RH lane entering a roundabout whith the intention of going straight on you CAN (not must) indicate right on approach then left when passing the first junction ?  The size of vehicle doesn't matter, but you should, of course, stay in lane.  I bow to your superior experience and knowledge, old timer !

On my way to work I enter a large roundabout in the left hand lane and then indicate right as I pass the first three exits. As I leave the fourth exit I am often cut up and beeped at by folk leaving from the right hand lane despite the clear road markings.
