This may help some one with this E36 OBC brake warning, " Brake light out" check your manual or words to the effect, after checking the obvious connections & cleaning the connections also the plugs to the rear brake lights, I have replaced the Brake light switch under & above the foot brake, a 20 min job, job fixed and sorted. this may help someone.

As with E30 .. it's either rear cluster earth, brake switch or bulb monitoring system . All known for it.
