KA problem!

I was driving home tonight, and my KA suddenly started to sound very roughly. I think maybe the engine was missing, and I could hear a slight rattling sound too!.........anyone got any idea what could be wrong?....going to take it to the Garage tomorrow, but my usual mechanic is away, so have to go somewhere new, which I hate, sometimes they'll tell a female any old rubbish, so would help to have some idea of what could be wrong.........TIA

when was your last service, what was it like performance wise, was it sluggish, what kind of noise was it

It's due a service now top_driver, the performance was fine, but it seemed a bit lumpy and there was a definate, not loud, but a rattling sound, I was near home when it started, so didn't drive far with it like that...........

what is the oil level like, are the spark plugs new enough, i would normaly start with that, maybe start up the car and locate the loudest point of the noise,, rattle sounds can be caused by sludge in the engine or miss aligned valves, you would also have problems with worn tappets and worn piston rings, but hopefuly it is something at the beginning of my sentence

Might sound ridiculous .. but .. You haven't put diesel in it, have you?

hahaha, ye that would cause a quite the sound, it would almost sound like a diesel car aswell

no top_driver and Albags, I haven't put any diesel in it!........must admit that because my partner is away most of the time, and I'm rubbish at 'car stuff', maybe the oil is low!.........Haven't checked it!....plugs may have had their day too, was due for a service a few weeks ago, but I was down with flu, so just didn't happen!.......how rubbish am I!............will take it to the garage tomorrow, and hope it's not too serious!.....will let you know!............

try start it now for 10 seconds, see if it has the sound then turn it back off

LOL - sorry welsh, I misread your post, you said "the engine was missing".... it wouldn't go at all in that case!

Ok top_driver, started it, ran it for around 10 secs, seems noisier than usual, and still lumpy, but no rattling sound........it's freezing out there!.......

was the oil light on at all, that can also be the result of dangerously low oil, if it is the next step is it being warped, before taking it anywhere check the oil level, because if the oil is too low, then your trip to the garage might end your engines days, and you might want to just top it up first, until it up to at least a safe level, then bring to your local garage

Oh thanks top_driver, the oil light hasn't come on, I'm sure of that, if it had I would have checked the oil level, I will check it in the morning before going to the garage (if I can find the dipstick, will get the manual out to find out where it is! how rubbish am I?) top_driver, took the car in this morning, he can look at at tomorrow!........it was missing, sounded like a bagwit of nails!.........he'll ring me tomorrow and tell me what the damage will be!.........sure it's going to cost though!.....sure to!......

did you manage to check oil level before driving it, hopefully it won't be costly
