Your post seems, Sinderella, seems to ignore the fact that all new models of cars must, by law, have running lights which come on as soon as the engine is turned on. That law came into effect 11 months ago:

Assuming that sinderella is referring to night-time driving in relation to side lights - it is legal to drive on sidelights between sunset and sunrise where there is good street lighting – although I would agree that it is an unwise thing to do.

I also agree with Vulcan42 in relation to how effective DRL are; when every vehicle is fitted with them – none will stand out.

if the parked car is on your side of the road you should give way to oncoming traffic.

if you're about to reverse out of a parking space in the supermarket, it pays to look in the rear mirror; found top centre of the windscreen.

Sidelights are for parking? no, they are sidelights!

You don't have to use indicators if there is nobody about - if you decide not to, it shows you have considered your circumstances.

However, round here, people seem not to use indicators at all - we realise that they know where they are going, after all - but nobody seems to know anything about roundabout etiquette and that you give way to traffic from the right - just don't all wait for each other.

Where does the Highway Code state that side lights are for parking? I agree with your thoughts on use (or lack of) indicators though. It`s a shame some drivers are too lazy to use them.

The other annoying thing is the people who park with headlights left on,especially on the wrong side of the road,as if they a re on dipped beam they shine to the left straight into oncoming traffic. I find taxis are amongst the worst offenders for this.

i thought parking lights were when 1 light on the front and the rear came on??
i alsothink sidelights are ok to drive on as the light starts dimming before needing head lights.

Regarding the lack of indicator use, I can see where you're coming from sinderella...but remember cars aren't steered by indicators. Sometimes people don't cancel them, or they are slow to cancel, or people use them inappropriately. Let the position and proximity of the vehicle be your main guide, not the indicators.

I agree mantaray - my driving instructor taught me to see the vehicle moving into the suggested maneouvre, rather than believing anyone's indicators.

Agree with boxtops,why indicate if there is nobody to see it. It just means the driver is on automatic and does it without thinking. Where I live it seems to be getting worse, with drivers indicating as they go round a bend. I followed a driver just yesterday going through a series of s bends and he indicated on each bend. Don't know where his mind was but it wasn't on his driving.

Drivers in thick fog driving on only sidelights. They wonder why people pull out in front of them and then flash their lights, blow their horn and give rude gestures. Well if your car was appropriately lit we would have seen you, and if you were going at an appropriate speed for the conditions you would not have had to take evasive action onto the grass.

I would also like to add my name to the list of people p*ssed off at those who indicate right at roundabouts when they are going straight on. It really is quite simple. Why do so many get a full license when they don't know how to indicate at a roundabout?

And I've not finished. Broken down cars being towed. Who spread the notion that they have to have their hazard lights on? Why do so many do this when it is complete baloney. Think about this for one moment. How will your indicators work if your hazards are on? All you do is place a notice on the back of the towed car saying 'on tow' and the registration of the vehicle that is towing you. Leave your ignition on so your brake lights and indicators work. In the event of electrical failure, give hand signals instead.
