My car passed its MOT last year but had a couple of warnings about the inside edge of the tyres. This was caused by wear and steering problems. The solution was to put these 2 tyres on the rear. The steering was put right.

However will the next MOT take notice of the warning from last year and lead to an MOT failure? Or will the car likely pass again with the same warning to the rear tyres?

Rov, I can only say that 2 MOTs ago, I was given some advisory notices about a couple of things on my car - when the MOT was done last year, they didn't mention those things the second time. Same garage.

2 years ago I got a warning that my brake pipes were starting to rust and would need relplacement. Car passed the last 2 times and the brakes were not even mentioned even though I asked them to do a special check to be sure it was safe. In fact this time the mechanic told me the brake pipes were stainless steel which can not rust. Warning are rubbish in my opinion , last year they told me the number plates would need to be replaced and again this year it was not even mentioned.

Rotating tyres can be a good idea. Time it right and all 4 can be due for replacement at the same time. Be a cheeky old sod and ask for a discount for buying 4 tyres at once. Even if they only knock a fiver each off, that's twenty smackeroonies in your pocket and not theirs.

Some garages publish discounts for multiple purchases like this but they aren't always the cheapest, and that isn't as much fun as haggling anyway.

The MOT tester will just look at the tyres as they are on the MOT test. If they meet the standard they will be fine. The warning is a 'get out' clause for teh MOT testers if anythnig should go wrong later. The warnings are usually for minor items. I had one for numner plate not legal. This plate had been fitted by a main dealer when the car was supplied which annoyed me, they passed it for its first MOT then the next garage gave me a warning. The gap between the letters and numbers was too large by about 19mm.

The car will be Fully checked Rov, they may ask you for the old MOT to see what mileage the car has done in 1 year, but on saying that, they WILL fully check the car out.

Thanks for your answers. Interestingly the warnings are written in stone on the government web site and you can retrieve them quite easily.

I suspected at the time the garage doing the MOT wanted some business in selling me some new tyres so they look for the smallest problems.

Never go to Kwikfit for an MOT I do not know a single case where they have passed a car 1st time . They always find something wrong and offer to fix it so that they can issue an MOT.
