motorbike registration.

I bought a Yamaha 1000 ex-up in bits a few years ago,intending to rebuild it.Unfortunately,due to unavoidable circumstances I have only just completed the rebuild. However, the registration plates and documents have been misplaced and I have unwittingly rubbed off the vin number when repainting the frame. How do I get a vin number and register the bike to me in order to make it street legal? I think it is a 1989 plate.
