Squeaking brakes.

When I break slowly in my car, the brakes make a squeaky noise, but if I brake hard (not often), they don't. Why is this and does it mean there is something wrong with the brakes? Thanks in advance.

It is most likely caused by friction from your brake pads on the caliper. You can fix this by removing the brake pads and applying some copper anti seize grease on the back of the brake pads. Also if you do this you can check the pads for wear while they are off the car.

Can also be caused by brake Linings dust on the rear brakes Traci, to cure, the rear wheels have to come off drums removed to clean, are you talking about a Peugeot? I hope you have a pair of overall's. lol

No TWR it's a Saab 93 2l turbo.

Brakes that are used gently all the time in lightly laden cars can develop all sorts of noises and problems - even corroded discs if the car isn't used daily. Very often a bit of hard use can improve things a lot.

I only use the car a couple of times a week and very rarely to go any distance.

Cant't help, but just wanted to say that if I had a Saab 93, i'd be driving about just for the hell of it, I love those :o)

I know Annie I love it too, especially in the summer when the top comes down. Hubby keeps telling me to get a new car, but I love this one so much even if the brakes do squeak.

lol - then dump him and I'll dump mine and we can drive about in your car :o) - and when the brakes squeak it'll just mean that more people look to see who is in it.

That could be causing the problem, Traci - I needed new front discs on one of my cars at 20000 because of "under use"- they were making a terrible noise. The other car (same make and model) has had no trouble at 40000miles because it is used more and "harder".

It's going in for an MOT at the end of the month, just don't fancy any nasty shocks if there is something wrong.

As said by Tony Re/brakes, if your O.H. is mechanically minded the job can be done under 4hrs, if he's unsure LEAVE IT, you can get a decent full set off EBay But do not (BYE CHEAP) you say you only use the car twice a week! there is every chance what you hear is Rust on the disks, this occurs after rain then leaving the car stand, but as soon as the car has done a mile or so it disappeared, check what I suggested regards the total cost if needed.

To add, if there is an issue regards your Pads / disks it will show up on the MOT Brake test.

Hi

as it is a performance car, you might find that you have uprated pads fitted, which need running in still, when were they last replaced?

My car has now done over a thousand miles since fitted and occasionally i still get that squeal, but performance outweighs embarrassment when stopping!
