Hi. My L Reg Astra Cesaro 1.6i, has failed it's M.O.T, for the emmissions test with a high reading. Engine not idling correctly. Could my husband fix this or will I have to take it to a garage? Thanks.

It can be something as simple as carburetter adjustment or progress through air leaks, worn valves or valve control gear or piston rings or worn cylinder. If yours is an 'i' then it will probably have engine management for the injectors which could be faulty or the injectors could be worn admitting too much fuel etc.
I had an EFi which initially failed its first MoT 'cos of this, the tech's were unable to reduce the fuel/air mixture. They investigated and found that the high pressure fuel feed should have had its excess fuel returned to the petrol tank. It was returning but a blob of solder had been dropped into the return swirl pot in the tank at manufacture. This prevented the fuel being returned efficiently and it was being forced into the engine causing too rich a mixture.
This story probably won't help you much but there are so many things which could cause your problem. You need a garage you can trust! Good Luck
