I have done this in the past, first off I rang my insurers asking what the price difference would be between my present car and the car I am going to view, tell them that it is possible that you may purchase the car you are going to view,They will say that as soon as you have purchased it then phone them and they will transfer your insurance from your old car to the new car.
As Tony, if the car is used, make sure you have tax / MOT / fuel.
