Fiat Punto 1.2

My '96 Fiat Punto 1.2 Petrol is giving me problems. I recently purchased the car knowing it had an oil leak, i managed to fix this problem but there is now another one. The 'fuel injection failure' light keeps coming on my dash board, this happens sometimes when i start my car and often when im driving, it causes my car to rev higher when the light appears therefore pushing the car a bit faster, it also has cut out on me about 4 times in 2 months. This happened twice when i was stopped ready to reverse, once slowing down at traffice lights and once when i was slowing down to go round a roundabout - luckily there where no cars around. Please someone help, if i take it too a garage they will charge way over the odds.
