Vauxhall Vectra Flange

I recently had my Vauxhall Vectra in the dealership having some work done under warranty, when i returned the guy i spoke to reeled off a long list of work they had found they could do under warranty while the car had been in the garage,one of the items they worked on was some sort of flange which gets clogged up with dirt and grime which they cleaned and this would improve my fuel economy, could anyone tell me what the proper name of this flange is and what it does?
