HI there folks, Mr. Chox wants to get an IPad for Xmas, but I think i have just about persuaded him not to spend quite so much of his hard earned cash and buy a Kindle Fire HD instead. Before Mr. Chox opens his wallet, just wanted to ask a few questions, and hope someone can answer, please ....

1. Do you need a virus protector installed on it?

2. Which of the extra accessories do you really need, and I believe that the USB charging cable comes with it ...
(a) Standing leather cover - or just a regular cover?
(B) stylus
(c) warranty?
(d) screen protectors

And are there any other "optional" extras that I would need (or not) to get with it?

Hope someone can offer some advice, thanks so much in advance, Chox.

Sceen protectors - screen seems unusually eager to make fingerprints :)

Standing cover useful both when reading and also to offer some protection against accident.

Do not buy a separate USB cable - it comes with one.

Thats pretty much all I would bother with.........
If he wants an ipad, are you sure he wont get the kindle fire and then be disappointed?
forget the kindle fire, you have to pay £10 to get rid of the pop up ads for one thing, plus it uses android ice cream. wait a week and get the Kobo Arc, open platform so not limited to amazon, cheaper, better capacity plus will have android's new jelly bean. you can get a cover, it comes with it's own plug in charger, you can get norton's tablet protection although it does have parental controls and an excllent kobo security app. and it is cheaper.
it's launching with jelly bean by the way, not ice cream (and if you get it before 25th november in smiths you get an extra fiver off)
"you have to pay £10 to get rid of the pop up ads "

Of course, that's one way of looking at it. The other is, "you get a £10 discount if you don't mind ads"
..checking the Kobo ad on the WH Smith page it says

"Kobo Arc is the only tablet that gets to know you, so you get more of what you love. Watch the Discovery Ribbon for personal recommendations based on the eBooks, magazines, music, and movies you've already collected."

That sounds awfully like the Kindle's "recommendations" feature to me.
does that mean that users of the Kobo Arc shouldn't be able to browse pre-selected titles that reflect their personal taste? At least there is an open platform and they can buy their books from anywhere and watch anything they like without being restricted to just one site,
"does that mean that users of the Kobo Arc shouldn't be able to browse pre-selected titles that reflect their personal taste?"

Nope, but it's the very feature on the Kindle that you criticised.
