I absolutely loathe people who run out of petrol and consequently block a road because they are too daft or lazy to read their fuel gauge. Even if you're fuel gauge doesn't work it isn't difficult to set the trip each time you fill up to help you judge when you next need to fill up.

Jump leads definitely. I nearly came a cropper back in August when I came to try to start my car in a very dreich carpark on a Sunday morning in Dumfries only to find that I'd left the car fridge plugged in overnight and the battery was completely flat. I was saved by a very kind old lady who agreed to park her car next to mine...
Yes, I would do it, and I did do it. A van driver and I helped a family to get home after their car had broken down. I lent the van driver my tow rope, and he towed the car, and I took the passengers home. All the way there, the wife complained incessantly about her husband's failure to maintain their car properly, so breaking down could have been a regular thing for that family.
Not so much in the car, but when i'm in the truck...no problem. Don't have Hopkirk's problem as I'm usually hauling muckaway in the tipper! I've pulled lowloaders off grass verges, fixed with cable ties (the most brilliant device known to man!) a lady's gear linkage and my mates trucks compressor pipe, got caught in the snow and invited a (unprepared) lady and her 5 year old into the cab for a cup of soup (she was amazed how you carry your food and cooker etc and that it was warm!!!), and in general on the tippers we help each other out if we get stuck...a 10 tonne tow chain comes in very useful! When I drove on the continent, most Brits would stop if they saw a Brit broke down, and I think most 'countrymen' stuck together. I remember a German guy got locked out of his cab and with a bit of ingenuity from me, a Dutchman, an Italian and 2 Poles, we managed to get it unlocked!! I miss those days.
yep and have done so
Most notably at Mont st. Michel there was a poor French bloke up to his axles (and knees) in fine mud silt with his wife gunning the accelerator and diggibg it deeper.
Small crowd watching clearly thinking "we're going to get covered if we go and help him"
But I was there with the defender and a tow rope and the tide was coming in
yes I did get him out
yes I did get coverred
yes I would do it again

In theory yes, and have done in the days when I could only afford an old car and kept stuff like jumps leads in the boot. In practice I know little of cars and if someone was in need of aid I'm probably not noticing that as I drive past on the motorway or A road. It's why I belong to a rescue organisation. I don't think one can rely on a knowledgeable willing helper being on the spot when you need them.
Yes I always do if I can, even when walking I have helped peole pushing their car etc. When I'm on the bike it's part of the biker code to stop and help other bikers. Pre mobile phone days I have often given a lift to a phone for example. It has been good when the boot is on the other foot though, complete strangers have helped me, especially when I was driving old bangers!
