Lovely Start To The New Year

On Jan 2nd I had a lovely surprise in the post - a speeding fine for doing 36mph in a 30mph limit. So after 30 odd years of driving with a clean licence I get 3 points and a £60 fine, I presume. Will this affect my insurance?

They should offer you a course, costs more but you can avoid the points and do not have to tell your insurance.

as its your first there is a good chance you will get offered a speed awareness course, it costs a little more but you don't get the points

and depends on yr insurance company, i deal with company cars so not that sure about personal insurances

I got caught by a speed camera a few years ago and got offered a speed awareness course instead but I'm sure it all came in the same envelope so maybe it depends on county or whether they are being run at the mo.

What took the photo? A fixed camera or a roadside mobile thingy?
Ask them when the machine was last calibrated.

You should at least let your insurance compnay know, though it may not effect the cost of your insurance.

If you dont let them know, and have to make a claim later, they may try to wriggle out of it by saying they did not know about the speeding offence.

You seem rather miffed, but you did break the law after all! There is substantially less chance of someone surviving relatively unhurt at 36 mph than at 30 mph.

Thank you for your answers - that was just the icing on the cake, Blue Toffee - the same day I heard that an insurance policy I had taken out on a loan had expired, and I still had quite a bit of money to pay, when I thought that the amount had been cleared, and then something else went wrong for us as well, so all in all 2013 didn't start brilliantly, but let's hope that the rest of the year is better!

I posted before I had seen the rest of your answers - I was really asking about my insurance rather than meaning to sound miffed about the incident, Quizmonster - I agree, I was over the speed limit. The notice I received was asking me if the car was mine, and was it me driving it at the time of the incident, so I've just answered that, and sent it back, and wait to hear from them again.

Now you have sent the info back and they know who was driving they will probably send out the offer of the course or accepting the points.

Isla, room for thought on this answer, find out if you can get your Speedo Speed / road tested to see if the speedometer is correct.

No leeway now regarding 10% over,Son-in-Law got done doing 32 in a 30 mph zone.

Islasmum,Son-in-Law enquired about an appeal and was told the probability was He would lose, and be fined even more, with a possible Ban,hence He took the cheaper option. (I wouldn't trust the Police as far I could throw them now.)

Thank you everhelpful, I will get my speedo checked, as TWR suggests, but I'm pretty sure that I'll just have to take whatever comes - just have to learn by my mistakes.

In our town we have a Haulage contractor with a HGV Test station, within that station they have a rolling road, this is used to check the speed of the HGV to calibrate the Taco, If it's possible for you to go to one of these places they may at a small charge check your speed for you.
For you people out there, there is a item on the market that warns you of all speed areas, its called Indica8tor with active intelligent voice guidance, & it's UK Legal, & before the do-goders pipe up, we can all do that little bit over the speed limit especialy when the Speed camers are close to each other as they are in Blackburn Lanc's. these just rest on the dash.
