The Mk1 & 2 had the engine in the rear so there is a glorified parcel shelf under the boot lid. Under the bonnet you'll find the spare wheel and because the bonnet is intentionally low to make it more streamlined, there is little room for much else. I'd recommend going to a garage and see for yourself.
I haven't seen a Mk3 but I'd imagine it to be the same.
I meant the engine being in the rear of the car rather than the front of the car. I couldn't remember whether it was mid (longitude) or rear (transverse) mounted. I thought rear would be easier to explain since mollymoo might not know the difference between a longitude/transverse mounted engine.
It was a long time ago but all I could remember was that there wasn't a great amount of room, but I stand corrected that there is a lot of room.
