Change Wheel Size For Winter?

My rear wheel drive car has 18 inch alloy wheels (255 on the rear and 225 on front). I am thinking about getting a set of winter tyres on steel rims or a cheap set of alloys for this weather we are having (waited til the horse has bolted I know).
My question is... Can I change the wheel size? If so will I need to get the same width with a different diameter or can I change that too? Black circles don't seem to have winter tyres for the rear, maybe the profile is too low I'm not sure. Anyway any advice appreciated.
