Why do drivers of automatics keep their brakes on at traffic lights?

Because they probably move off with the brakes lights lit due too the fact they have their left foot on the brake and the right foot on the accelerator.

Of course she doesn't sit with her brake lights on, it was a joke. Please un-twist your knickers. You seem to be in a bit of a strop today!

You MUST NOT

use any lights in a way which would dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders
use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves to avoid dazzling other road users (see Rule 226).
In stationary queues of traffic, drivers should apply the parking brake and, once the following traffic has stopped, take their foot off the footbrake to deactivate the vehicle brake lights. This will minimise glare to road users behind until the traffic moves again.

Well I drive an automatic and have my brake lights on at traffic lights exactly the same as I do when I'm driving a geared car. The automatic part is irrelevant.

Guilty as charged, I never use the handbrake, even on hill starts.

I cannot stand drivers who pull up the handbrake without depressing the button giving out that awful ratchety sound.
