is this judge doolally?

Steven Conlan’s car hit Grahame McGregor after he missed a stop sign and illegally drove through a junction. The satnav system had failed to register the junction and had not instructed the motorist to stop, a court heard.

satnavs have NEVER instructed the driver to stop at junctions!
They give you directions, not point out every road sign and marking for you so you don't have to bother thinking for yourself!

I am amazed that his legal team even dared to suggest this, and that no-one thought to tell this to the judge!

Couldn't agree with you more joko.
The irony is that there is a very strong possibility that the accident was actually caused by the driver paying attention to his sat-nav, instead of to what was happening on the road.
I think that sat-navs are more of a hazard than using a mobile phone whilst driving.
That's mad!!!

One step up from 'the devil made me do it'. Take responsibility for your actions man and don't tell lies.
The judge needs a talking to as well.
Sat Navs are useful but they have to be used in conjunction with common sense.
Just last weekend my Sat Nav told me to drive down a road which had been dug up and if I had obeyed the instructions my car would have gone down a hole.
A few years ago I was stopped for speeding but I was slowing down after I realised somebody had turned the sign around so it was showing 60 for a 30 mph limit.
The police officer agreed that the sign was misleading so I was not prosecuted.
It was however obvious from about 200 yards beyond the sign you could not do 60 safely so if somebody carried on at that speed they should have been prosecuted for dangerous driving.
That said if somebody had carried on doing 40 I would have said that was not dangerous.

Bill
Yes, he is doolally. But it's useful to know, for future reference. If you get caught speeding, you can always say "google maps told me to." Parking ticket-" my friend said it was okay" Madness!
Yet another Judge that should be sacked with immediate effect, with NO payoff.
Not at all Sat Navs should note when the car in front is braking and tell you to too. And remind you to fill up when you pass the filling station. Does the driver have to do all the thinking now ? In my day we had our partner in the passenger seat to do that for you.
Old-Geezer, my OH STILL does all the driving, I just sit behind the steering wheel. Soooooooooo frustrating!
He is probably in the same Masonic Lodge as the Judge.
Don't you have to say 'OK' to a disclaimer screen before using any sat nav, thereby putting the responsibility back on the driver rather than the manufacturer?
Neither my Garmin nor TomTom satnavs provide any advance warning to stop before driving off a cliff or a harbour wall into the sea. Does this Judge get paid for doing his job?
Well the judges haven't exactly covered themselves in glory lately have they? Looks like another example of dipstickery from one of M'Luds.

Satnav blindneess is becomming more common as drivers seem to think the satnav muist be right therefore the road etc must actually be an illusion! There was one a few months back that turned up a railway track. Now I don't know about you but the presence of railway lines on the road would cause me to think about it a bit!
Satnavs do not tell the drivers to stop or give way anyway, what's he on about?

most satnavs do not allow you to adjust them etc when you are moving - mine won't because it knows it means you are trying to drive and mess with it at the same time.

but even if he was fiddling with it, he should have been paying attention - satnavs also do not show the road markings so the fact that they were quite faded is irrelevant.
they look pretty clear on the photos anyway!

i accept that satnavs can cause some confusion at times, - i myself was flashed doing the wrong speed because my old maps were showing the old speed limit - but that is a feasible things to happen and could happen to anyone - and i was not 'let off'.

but the judge has just excused it! there will be loads more people saying this now hoping to get let off

i just cant believe nobody pointed out to him what satnavs actually do!

Unlike the useless picture in the article, here's the junction from the direction the motorist was approaching:

https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Consett,+County+Durham&hl=en&ll=54.833313,-1.880894&spn=0.005271,0.013937&sll=54.9373,-1.647263&sspn=0.041862,0.111494&;oq=consett,+c&t=h&hnear=Consett,+County+Durham,+United+Kingdom&z=17&;layer=c&cbll=54.833759,-1.879934&panoid=NKFnjsru8CbP4QBxKzXFhg&cbp=12,216.06,,0,0.48

On the face of it, the motorist should have seen that it was a junction and is entirely at fault for the cyclist's death.

That said, the motorist has not been "let off". He has been found guilty, but "spared jail".

I feel very sorry for all involved.
stop sign and stop line, must be blind as a bat, should not be driving anyway.
Question Author
that makes it even worse! a big stop sign.
not all roads have stop or give way signs.

i agree he must have been blind - i wouldnt be surprised it actually he was on his phone or something, but is blaming the satnav
