The third party has finally paid up and accepted full liability for the car accident. They estimated the car at 2250 as it was not repairable and stated that they estimated the salvage value of the car to be 200. They have thus deducted the salvage value of the car and send a cheque for 2050. I cannot find a salvage company that will pay that amount for the car. The question is who does the car belong to now. It is lying in a car park. Can i try and repair the damage or do i have to legally write it off?

That's very unusual normally they dispose of the vehicle themselves and you get the full price.

Did you have any conversations with them where they might have got the idea that you wanted to retain the vehicle yourself?

It sounds as if the car is a category D write off so you can repair it yourself but it will have the write off noted against it and will always show up if a search is done. which will affect it's value and you'll find that some insurance companies won't cover a repaired write-off

This sounds like a misunderstanding - ring up the underwriters and talk to them about it.

My dotty friend recently wrote off her car - she left the handbrake off & it rolled down a gradient into another one!

As she was fully com., she was paid out in full. She also bought the salvaged car back & is having it repaired to sell on. Personally, I wouldn't bother, but everyone to their own!

i think if im correct that you can repair it yourself. my friend had this though and he said that he had to take it to somewhere which he called the ministry, they then looked around the car to make sure that it was all ok and that he hadnt welded 2 halfs of cars together etc, then he had an MOT and he is now driving it around. maybe this might be what you need to do. i suppose it depends how bad the damage really is though. be aware im not entirely sure whether this info is correct.good luck though!
