Power Steering Problem

Very infrequently, when turning right, I loose the power steering for a split second. The belt sounds like it's starting to squeal, briefly, then catches and carries on as normal. The PS fluid is at normal level and there are no leaks from the rack.
Car is a Škoda Superb with 155,000 miles on the clock.
Any ideas before I resort to the garage?

It seems to me that you have identified the fault – the belt needs tensioning (or replacing if too stretched).

It is likely that for some reason, a right turn is exerting a maximum load on the power steering, causing the belt to slip. Maybe because you are turning the steering wheel to the right, faster than to the left.

I hope you're right Hymie. It also seems worse when the front left tyre is slightly underinflated. That would put a higher load on the steering when turning right and fits your theory. I'll report back when I get it sorted. Thanks.

If the car has covered that sort of milage I would channge ALL THE BELTS Graham, whilst your under the bonnet check all hoses for splits etc.

TWR. Cambelt was done at 120k. I presumed the alternator/power steering belt would be done at the same time. Mrs. -W is away for a couple of days with that car. Will check when she gets back. Thanks.
