We have just bought a used car from Evans Halshaw. The price on line was £6789.00. It has now gone up to £6896.99 because of Admin fee and VAT.Why do they not add this on before they put the price on the car.

I have the same thoughts about theatre/concert tickets! Why don't they include those extras when quoting prices - we have to pay them so why not?
If it wasn't stated on the website I'd have refused to pay it. There is no shortage of used car dealers.
It's the same as plane tickets - there are costs added to the price. It must be somewhere on their advertising, it would be illegal otherwise.
This is on their website, but I can't see anything more specific - they should pop up when you get to the Buying page.

"Prices and vehicle details including mileage may differ from that shown. As the vehicles shown are used vehicles the specification may not be as standard. Additional mileage may be incurred due to use of vehicles for demonstration purposes. Offers, prices and vehicle details may be subject to change. Please ensure that a vehicle has any specific feature that is important to you prior to purchase. Colleagues at our dealerships will be happy to assist you. "
Rosiew, there would have been one way to sort this, & that would have been the way I would have sorted " keep your car" I can not understand how all this has just come about! you go into a shop, 05p for a Bag, a friend wanted to bye a shed, the floor was extra, are they going to give you tissue next and ask the the internal coil be extra, I'm bloody sure they are all taking the pizz ut of the public big style.
If they were asking £6789 you could have got at least £289 off by haggling, getting the car for £6500 (or maybe less).

Never pay the asking price for a used car.

We tried haggling about the price but was told that they do not bring down the price of the car AT ALL. I would not recommend Evans Halshall and will never buy from them again. Thanks to those who replied.
Then rosiew i would have walked away, and then go back in a few days time, its amazing how quickly they can change their mind. Recently i had a ford dealer offering £4/5k (~20%) off a new s-max after he had told me they didnt knock any money off new cars, just by me walking away.

Before you look at cars shop arround on the internet to get an idea what cars sell for.
Not knocking you Rosiew, why did you not walk away or ask your friends for advice regards your purchase? I know we are all different, but I will not except one price & I always barter for reductions.
eh?

VAT would take it up way more!

What was the Admin for? Finance?

Was it actually possible to walk in with cash and buy it for that price?
Did they give you a year's tax and a Tank of petrol maybe?

Chance would be a fine thing I hear you say!
I've never ever paid ticket price on a used car. I always start by taking off around 10% to start the 'dickering'. Always go and bargain towards the end of the month because they want to keep their monthly sales figures up.
Don't take silly money for your existing car if it's part exchange.

Ask for and expect mats and full tank of fuel as a sweetener. If 'used' expect a full service and full years MOT, plus a copy of the HPI check. If no progress is being made walk away leaving them your 'phone number.

Almost guaranteed they will telephone you back.
I too wish that the price displayed includes all compulsory charges. Otherwise this could be the scenario:-
For sale 1979 Bentley Turbo. 1p.
Then when you agree to buy the car I charge you £10,000 for the test drive. Another £10,000 for filling out the V5 and a further £10,000 for banking your draft for 1p. I call this the Ryanair business plan.
I offered on a used car earlier this year, on t'internet.

When I went in to discuss it, they tried to add on an admin charge but I said my previous offer stood and I would not increase it.

They accepted that.
Vat on six grand is not one hundred pounds
t'internet Hopkirk? What part of Bolton are you from? Been t'Egypt for your holidays?
