I have a 1996 Citroen Xantia 1.9TD which is suffering from a temperamental Rev.Counter. When travelling it will suddenly drop to zero where it will stay for as long as it feels like it then it returns to normal,it may do this once or several times on a journey. I have been told that it is a sensor on top of the gearbox but i have been unable to find this, can anybody help me as to its location?

speedo is normally driven from the gearbox, rev counter normally picks a signal up from the alternator.
