I intend to use a wiper motor to supply a drive to a machine. Will the motor run if I supply power from a small 12V transformer similar to what is used for model railways.

you need to find the correct current and voltage for the motor and get a transformer to match.

Sigma when you say "model railway" do you mean the small ones than you have in the house or the sort where you can ride on the coaches? A standard wiper motor is much more powerful than a 'domestic' model train engine so it would run, but not for long without getting the transformer very hot and burning it out.
oops "that you have"
you need to find the correct current and voltage for the motor and get a transformer to match.
Hi Sigma,
A standard 12volt Battery Charger might be your best bet- but make sure it can match the amps required by the wiper motor- 5 amps minimum I would guess?
