I witnessed an accident between 2 vehicles where 1 driver was at fault and the other was blameless. I contacted the blameless drivers office cause their name was on the van and told them if they contacted me I'd give a statement. I heard nothing for about a month then received a letter from their insurers. To cut to the chase I never gave permission for them to give my details to a third party. Would you be ok with that or would you be unhappy?
I think the point is ///never gave permission for them to give my details to a third party/// they really should have asked first, not just passed details on.
I would expect to give the statement to the insurance company in any event. If you gave a statement to the driver's employer the insurance would still want you to give them one, so they've saved you some hassle.
Well you did offer to give the statement in the first place, they've only done what I would have in their position and handed all the relevant information they had to their insurers

I would be ok with that. Witnessing an accident and giving the driver your name and contact details indicates that you have put yourself forward as a witness. The driver would have to give details of the accident to his Insurance company including the names of any witnesses. As long as you can clearly remember what happened I wouldn't worry about it.
It is the insurers who deal with accidents so who did you expect to give your statement to? If you had given it direct to the driver it would only have been passed on to the insurers . You offered to give a statement about the accident and they accepted your offer.
