Scrapping Vehicle

I understand that Scrap dealers are no longer allowed to pay cash for a vehicle bought for scrap .

This scrap yard will pay by cheque.
But what if the cheque bounces and they have already taken away the vehicle ?

Then you're in the same position as anyone else who is owed money. You can only write a formal demand for payment, threatening legal action if it's not received within a specified period. If you don't get paid you can then pursue a small claims action online:

Of course if the company goes bust there's a risk that you could lose your money (or part of it, since the administrator/receiver might find that there's enough money left to make partial payments to creditors).

However I'd have no worries about accepting a cheque from a well established company. The firm most people use around here has been in business for over 50 years and has an excellent reputation. Even so, there's no need for people to take a cheque from them if they'd rather not, since they also offer direct-to-debit-card electronic transfers. (So, if you're dubious about using a company that offers only cheques, you might want to seek out another firm that can pay the money straight to your bank account)

ScrapCarBuyers.co.uk appears to be working as an agency for local firms, which would explain why they've got web pages like this one:

You'd almost certainly get more money by going directly to one of those firms. (Further, I wouldn't deal with any company that fails to include a postal address on its website, as required by UK law, since you wouldn't know where to complain to if you had problems).

Motorwise.com is also an agency. (From their terms of business:"5.1 All payments will be made by the appointed Recycling Company, the details of which will be provided on your quote.
5.2 Payment will be made promptly upon collection of the vehicle and in accordance with the payment terms agreed between the Seller and the Recycling Company. ")

For a reliable local firm, look in Yellow Pages (or on Yell.com http://www.yell.com ) under 'Car & Vehicle Dismantlers'. Then check out the websites of any likely companies to see if you can find out how long they've been established or (much better) ask at work or down the pub if anyone has used their services.

Alternatively, any firm which is a member of the British Metals Recycling Association is likely to be reliable. (I've just checked the list of member firms around here. They're all long-established, well-known and trustworthy). Enter your postcode here

We scrapped a van (about three years ago now) and arranged for someone to come and get it. I was amazed that they took our word for it as they they just took it (we were out) and put the money thought the door (didn't get the log book or anything). I remembered thinking at the time that someone could have just maliciously (sp ?) done the same thing to any vehicle.

Does it still drive? If so you will get far more driving it to a weigh in yard than selling it to a scrap dealer.

Stick it on Ebay for spares, buyer to collect. Simple.

I feel that it is wrong for scrap car dealer to only pay buy cheque or transfer.... A car is not a whole pile of copper cable with no identity or history. It has identity marks... VIN and number plates and you have proof of your identity and your connection to that vehicle..so why should it be included in scrap metal legislation? The legislation was surely implemented to stop cable and lead theft that was not traceable.
