We bought a new car today. It will be ready to pick up on 1st September. My current car tax disc runs out at the end of August. Will I be ok to drive to the garage in my current car, to pick up the new one on Sept. 1st?

do you need insurance to drive it home, tilly, or does the dealer cover it.

The dealer arranges a five day insurance, sweety.
They gave me 7.
Trade plates can only be displayed if a garage employee is present in the vehicle.
I often wondered about that. I've only bought cars off blokes in the pub.

Well, I don't work for Evans Halshaw so that's a no, no.
Evans Halshaw......oh dear!!
If the car's not taxed, and you write it off on the way to the garage, you have the additional risk that the insurance company won't pay out - most insurance policies insist the car is on the road legally (i.e. tax, qualified driver, mot if applicable, etc etc)
there is no grace, they'll start to ask questions after a certain period. Just drop the car off at the garage the day before you pick up the new one or take a chance, you'll dead unlucky to get caught. How much is your tax? You could tax it for a year then reclaim 11 months but really I'd take a chance myself, or drop it of on Aug 31st. Or as you are the customer you could get the garage to deliver your new car and take away the old one on their trade plates.

Thanks, Tora. I'll ask them tomorrow.
Live dangerously. Take the risk.
Could you drive in to sort the paperwork the day before and get EH to deliver the new car and take the old one away on trade plates on the 1st?
Negligible risk Tilly - you would have to be extremely unlucky to be pulled up!
yes, I almost never see a cop round our way.

Which suggests they may all be in Tilly's street, waiting for that one false move.
Sadly those days of risking it because the chances of an overzealous pc spotting your out of date tax disc are long gone.
ANPR is everywhere, and you can't sweet talk a computer.
"Taking the risk" is selfish - suppose you severely maim somebody and your insurance doesn't pay out - you're gambling with other people, not just your own chances.
Another solution would be for the garage to bring your new car to your house,
and then they could drive your car to their garage (on their trade plates ).
I totally agree, they won't want lose the sale just for the sake of delivering across town.
Insurance wouldn't refuse to pay out to a third party because your tax had run out Canary.

Whoever told you that?
The correct answer is no,but I would, you have a disc that only expired the day before and a reasonable explanation and the chance of even being stopped is pretty remote. Go for it girl..
