100 Year Old Drivers....

Anyone see the TV program last night? there are apparently nearly 200 drivers on the road over 100 and about 10000 over 90! eek Now I'm not one to say they should be stopped at some arbitary age but I think they should have to have some sort of test. The ones last night, even the one that had a driving assesment, look down right dangerous to me. Stilll I can see the freeedom it gives them and to be fair they are no worse than a lot of youngsters. Gawd knows how they get insurance!

I saw the program and the one thing that worried me was if they could pass the eye test. Many of them did not even have glasses and one said he had not had an eye test for at least 20 years. Once you are over 70 you have to certify that you meet the eyesight requirements every time you renew your licence which I think is every 3 years at that at that age. I bet many of them did not tell the truth or are unaware how bad their eyesight has become.

In golf, and 'age shooter' is a golfer who manages to score a round in the same or less number of strokes to his age.
The oldest golfer to shoot his age was 103-year-old Arthur Thompson of Victoria, British Columbia. Thompson was playing the Uplands Golf Club in Victoria when he accomplished the feat in 1972.
How his other kind of driving was I don't know, but I imagine it was pretty good. :0)

OG it was a very entertaining programme. I smiled when an old lady told her daughter who had taken her car keys off her so she couldn't drive anymore that she had now cut her out of her will.

" - err no, when they reach 80 they are assed similarly to 17 year olds, according to a mate of mine in the business because when the do have an accident it tends to be expensive death and distruction. There was a woman round here the other year who put her foot on the wrong pedal in a big automatic and killed 4 in a bus queue.

Not sure what the answer is but I just thougt they all looked very dangerous on the program last night.

Personally, I'd like to see a Medical for anyone over 65, renewable every 5yrs at least.

Before I retired I held a PCV/PSV for about 33 years. I had to have a strict independent Medical every 5yrs until I was 60, thereafter it was every 3 yrs. My driving skills were assessed at least three times a year by 'hidden shoppers'.

If a re-test might become compulsory I think it would be unfair. I've seen many people from 30yrs old and upwards who would have severe problems doing a re-test. "
