On October 1st do we simply remove our tax discs from our windscreens, or do we wait until we renew for an invisible one?

Cop cars gadgets can't read my writing now!
I understand there is a network of number plate recognition cameras which pick up untaxed cars so the system doesn't just rely on the devices in police cars. I'm not sure whether the ones in petrol stations are linked up too- I doubt it but if they could be that would help.
I expect that most of the untaxed vehicles at present are picked up by cameras rather than through tip offs or visual sightings by police/traffic wardens.
I do think quite a few people will take a chance though and claim ignorance. Will we still get renewal reminders by post?
Had mine a couple of weeks ago, ff.
I agree with factor, I think most cars are picked up by technology rather than human eye.
My tax is free anyway as I'm disabled, I presume the technology will know this and not just show that I haven't paid (even tho I haven't)
It's not just police cars - there are any number of cameras with number plate recognition at road junctions, on motorways, at petrol stations, traffic lights, roadside....and they are multiplying.

No human input necessary - the camera recognises the vehicle isn't taxed, takes a photo and sends an alert.
Someone told me (I think they were from the speed awareness course) (I must add.....I was working in the building not on the course) that the same cameras pick up people smoking and using phones....

....and doing their mascara at the lights ummm?
Yes...that kind of thing. It's easy to do on traffic light controlled roundabouts.
Which police? Those pushing pens at HQ? Checking by remote control?
At least if a member of the public sees an untaxed or out of date disc it can be reported.
Small boys collecting numbers of cars not being moved perhaps?
How will correlations be made?
If you go to gov.uk you can check the tax status of any vehicle, knowing the registration number and make, so you will still be able to check a car you suspect of having no tax and report it.

Checked mine and all is well, so I'm preparing for the clear windscreen look asap!
Maybe some old tax discs will become collectors items one day. Has anyone saved ALL their tax discs over the years?
i've been told today by someone who 'knows' that tax discs must be removed from the car after October 1st or an offence will be committed . Worth checking.
There's nothing here to say it's illegal not to remove the old disc, derek https://www.gov.uk/government/news/vehicle-tax-changes

Interesting that we'll no longer have to apply for refunds if we change vehicle - it says it'll be done automatically.
janbee, I did once, but when I got rid of my old car I binned the discs :-(
Derek, could you ask your source what the offence might be please?
Littering .... a dashboard?
Douglas, he was told by someone who 'definitely knows' !

Nothing like spreading a good rumour.
