A friend of mine has come up North for the holiday and has forgotten to bring the form from the DVLA that he needs to tax the car on 31st December.

Can he go to the DVLA office here to tax his car, with proof of identity?

I know he can tax it at the PO, but hasn't got his insurance or MOT documents with him either.

I haven't taxed a car at a PO for years so I thought you had to have your insurance details etc to show them.

That's great if that's the case.
Question Author
He hasn't got any of those documents with him, WR.
chrissa there are no more local DVLA offices. Or are you in Swansea ?

you can do it online as long as mot an insurance are up to date which DVLA will have on their databank no problem
Question Author
No, tonyav. There was an office in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne. It is still being listed on the web.
All local DVLA offices have been closed.

To tax a vehicle he can:
(a) go to a Post Office [but that requires the V11 reminder or the V5C registration document, together with the MoT certificate, if relevant. Proof of insurance is no longer needed, as that can be checked electronically] ; or
(b) go online [but that needs either the number from the V5C or the number from the V11 - the rest can be checked electronically] ; or
(c) phone 0300 123 4321. [That also requires the number from the V11 or V5C but it might be worth a call to see if it can be done solely from the registration number - although I tend to doubt it].

Has your friend got a friend or neighbour who has a spare key (or who can be told where one is hidden)? If so, it would be simplest if he could get them to text the V11 number to him.
Question Author
To do it online, berniecuddles, he needs the 16 digit ref number, which he doesn't have.
I agree with bernicuddles about mot and INS, but he may Need the dvla reminder as it has a bar code that brings up all the info.
Question Author
He has just moved and has no spare key.
I'm afraid it's closed down now, chrissa.

Basically, he is st****d then?
Looks like it, chrissa. He could maybe phone Swansea and see what they say.
Question Author
Well, you learn something new every day, tony. Thanks. It's been there for decades, too.
As a last resort chrissa1 go to the PO Monday i think they may be able to you but don't forget go to a main PO not a branch.
Chris mentioned it before me, chrissa. I just crossed posts with him.
Another money saving exercise by the DVLA i expect, chrissa.
help you

If he decides to drive home without tax and he is stopped by an ANPR, will they confiscate his car or will he just have to pay a fine?
