OK, bit of a weird one this... high up on several buildings in Norwich (St Stephen's Street, Westlegate and a couple of other streets that I don't know the name of) there are signs that should be in swimming pools. For example, No Diving, Shallow End, Deep End, 1.3m etc. These signs are quite new, and are on buildings like Superdrug and M+S - Does anyone know why these signs are here - it's driving me mad!

It's an "Arts Project" no doubt. There was one a few years ago in Hackney, (London) where sign posts were set up on a notorious estate.
They looked exactly like normal pedestrian signposts (arrow shaped, blue lining and man symbol) but instead said things like "Hope" and "Inspiration".

Don't know about the Norwich one, but it sounds like that.

As I thought, here's a link I found after 20 seconds Googling - it gives an explanation and some other links about the project.

Clearly I am a total luddite, but how, exactly, is this art. Or should that be 'art'.

Had I known this sort of rubbish was funded, I'd've gone for some money for the Men At Work sign (you know the one, with the sillouette of a man shovelling) I drunkenly brought back to my student house in the early nineties, and which was still propped up against the front wall two years later when I left.

Sasha I noticed the Deep End sign and wondered what on earth was going on too! Now we know!

brachiopod - thank you so much for finding this for me - I never even thought about googling for it - didn't occur to me that anything would be on the internet about it. I can now sleep tonight - thanks again!

No probs, Sasha !!

Can't remember how I searched now - I think I just put;
Norwich + Art + "No Diving" and it was the first link (a FlickR photoset).

Still can't find any pictures of those Hackney signs though...... :o)

Just wondering, being a local family, any 'Tickle should have won' graffiti left as well?

I think the project is either something from the twilight zone or a total mickey take, btw. Putting signs in inapproprate places is hardly a revolutionary or talented idea.

And I never knew the road leading from Sainsbury's was called Lakenham Way. I'll have to make a trip back home sometime to investigate.
