Garmin Nuvi 50 Map Updates

Hi,
Am trying to get a 1st map update on a friend's 18 month old Garmin Nuvi 50. I've downloaded Garmin Express & am using my TomTom cable to connect it to a PC (the Garmin didn't come with any cables or device) but Express isn't recognising that the Garmin's connected. The cable works as the Garmin's powered & I can "ok" when it starts up (& asks for an update !) as long as I do it immediately it's powered.

Can anyone help please.

Try another cable and make sure the Garmin is switched on before you plug it into the pc. I also think you have to 'pair' the Garmin program on your pc and make sure it can sync to the specific model no. of the Garmin unit

Will be getting the Garmin back tomorrow, with a new usb cable. How do I pair it with the PC ? Thanks ...

I have a TomTom and have found that the only cable I can use with it to update maps etc is the one provided with it. It looks just like a standard USB cable but I've come to the conclusion that it's wired differently from the USB standard. I suggest (like Slackalice) that you try the Garmin with a bog-standard USB cable.
