If you are not happy, go onto Moneysupermarket or the like and request another quote. A number of insurance companies will give you various quotes and it's really up to you which one you accept. I cant imagine why you feel you are being ripped off ?
Last Thursday I got my annual renewal reminder from Direct Line ....
they wanted £272.00
Friday morning I used MS and received 39 quotations ranging from £151 upto £500+
I then phoned Direct Line and said "I had just been quoted a better price by a competitor and if they couldn't do something with the price, I wouldn't be renewing".
The operator asked what I was expecting to pay for the same cover that DL were offering ... I said at least £100 less.
How would £171 sound she said ... I went ahead and renewed and got the same cover they had previously offered me for £272.00
If you don't ask ... you wont get. Last year the AA quoted me £169 for breakdown cover, after refusing to pay and using the' RAC and top cash back' as a lever I ended up getting it for £50 from the AA
Don't pay it !

Buying insurance is no different from buying a TV, car, computer etc. Ever since the abolition of Retail Price Maintenance about 40 years ago, nothing has a price. You want a new TV, you shop around for the one that has the features you want at the price you want; then you buy it. Insurance is just the same.
I completely agree with vulcan...I never go for the lowest price. I want decent cover at a fair price with excellent service should the worst happen.
You only have to see the Which? customer satisfaction ratings to realise that the lowest premiums usually result in poor customer satisfaction (take Admiral as an example).

I really can't understand where 'Thief' and 'ripping off' come into it. You are obviously searching the web so can see they are up front about their policies and how much they charge -you have the choice! Its not like they are sending you a quote by email or post, and saying that you have to take this quote and no others are available. Some companies are not interested in insuring certain types of driver or vehicle so will quote huge rates to put you off - if you are a middle aged driver like me, never had a claim, driving a small car, in a good postal code, then they are fighting over you and by contacting the insurers you can play one off against another.
