I've just agreed to buy a secondhand Corsa. My old Y reg Subaru is not worth much and the dealer has offered me £200 for it.
If I perhaps, privately sold it, I might get £400.
I pick my new car up on Saturday and am arranging insurance with my current insurers, Saga. My question is, if I decide to keep my old car and sell it privately, do I have to keep it insured until I sell it?
It all sounds a bit of a hassle really and, it would make my life easier if I accepted the £200 from the dealer.
Personally...I would accept the dealer offer (you don't know when it might sell otherwise), keep it insured with Saga until you swap cars and they will simply make an adjustment on the premium...you'll be paying more and that will take you back to November renewal.
My son said that I should sell it privately and so we left it at that. I'm just thinking that if I rang the chap up tomorrow and ask him if he would take it off my hands, he would knock it off the price of the new car. Or give me cash.
As long as the vehicle is kept off road, it can be sold without tax etc. The buyer can drive it to a pre-arranged MOT centre legally & arrange tax, insurance then.
Buyer must provide proof of appointment if police ask.
He could still arrange an MoT - that's the only way he can legally get it home with no tax, as the tax will expire as soon as he buys it; your house to arranged Mot, MoT garage to home (he'll still need insurance).
No, he won't HAVE to get it MoTd but it's a cunning way to get it home legally. Under the new rules, the minute he buys it from you the road tax expires, so he cannot drive it home. You are allowed to drive a car with no RFL if it's going for an Mot, so he can book an Mot, drive it there and then back home with no RFL, although he still needs to insure it.
Sell it Private & make sure if there are any faults, tell the buyer, also bought as seen, If selling the buyer to provide his / her own Insurance cover for the trial, If it's a matter of a week I would not SORN, it's too much messing about with the V5, regards the MOT, the can does not need one as it already has one.
