If you had any notion that someone you knew was in bad health, eyesight, reaction, hearing, would you advise them to " call it a day" and hand their licence in? if they would not take your advice would you take measures to avoid an accident waiting to happen & report them to the police?

I have had to do it , took the keys away for good - wasn't easy to remove someone's last scrap of independence, but necessary.

Police are not interested as a crime has not been committed. the thing that makes it harder for me is that I know the whole of my family will turn against me and many people will say that's selfish on my part and am sure I will now get plenty of comments like that. If only life was that simple.

Rather stupidly, I did not connect this question with yours (I blame the new pills) - you can only do what you think is right.

In my case it was my husband, he was near the end of life and heavily reliant on Oramorph amongst other meds. I let it go as far as I dared then had to call a halt, he was by then too weak to argue or defy me , it wasn't easy.

I hope I would have the strength, but I don't know. We all know what should be done, but if the rest of the family are against you, then it would make it very difficult.

Sorry to hear that Mamy. I don't think it should have to come to that point for families to have to 'report' their relatives to the authorities they should be tested automatically over a certain age.

Should have added I have decide to contact DVLA on Monday and see what they say.

Sorry, I worded that badly - didn't report my Husband but took away the car keys.

I have reported two friends who refused after drinking to leave their cars at the pub - both were warned and I did report.

Not ever having been in the situation I can't be sure, but I suspect I'd allow them to know when it's time. Unless things were clearly beyond, and I doubted the individual's mental ability to make rational decisions.
