I have a diesel car after 42 years of petrol cars and I will never go back to petrol.
Vauxhall Zafira 7 seater 1.7 eco diesel, 50 mpg around town and 80 mpg on a long run.
No visible emissions from the exhaust, engine so quiet you can hardly hear it on tick over.
Particulate filter and a catalytic converter.
Diesels are already under attack from environmentalists for their dangerous emissions. If it's found to be an industry wide problem (rather than just VW) then it could be another nail in the coffin of this type of engine.
eddie you must be mutton, I have never seen a diesel that I can't identify by the racket it makes. Zafira? please I can hear those in the next street! it may well be quiet in it but outside....
TTT I assure you my car is very quiet. Other diesels are a lot more noisy.
You would not know mine is a diesel unless you look at the badge.
Next door has the same car but petrol version can't tell which engine is which from the sound of tick over. He gets 40 mpg max where I get over 60 mpg.
^^ My diesel has a 6 speed box, at 70 mph it is turning over at 2100 rpm.
The petrol version has a 5 speed box and is more like 3500 rpm at 70 mph.
Makes it a lot quieter. 90% of the time I am under 2000rpm .
We have a diesel Jetta, very quiet and amazing mpg for a 2 litre car, we usually get 60+ on a run. The problem seems to be for cars after 2009, ours is a 58, so hopefully won't get caught up.
Why are they going after Volkswagen for fraudulent behaviour that might affect 10 million people? They have not dealt with the fraudulent Bankers that affected the whole world.
