Why are not many manufacturers designing cars nowadays with the protective moulding strips along the doors and wings ?

A couple of things come to mind Bazile, Cost mainly & side / wheel arch covers hold water / rust, the result in time, new wing.
Fashion.
That's my bugbear to. You can spend a small fortune on a decent car yet it's still vulnerable to the dreaded car park damage that other people's doors and trolleys can cause. Citroen's C4 Cactus is at least trying. Must admit I'd rather have a car with less bells and whistles and some dent/scratch resistant bodywork instead.
