Can anyone point me at a step by step guide please. I googled etc and saw the DVLA site but you cannot see the wood for the trees. The problem is they try to cover every possible eventuality and end up covering none, thanks.

The channel Islands are part of Great Britain so that link which is about importing a car to GB is not any use.

Really Eddie, I thought page 5 was quite helpful.

Problem is that unless you are a channel islands resident moving to the mainland you have to pay VAT at 20%.
The Channel Islands are not part of Great Britain they are a Crown Dependency. But probably more importantly these days, as far as importing something is concerned, they are not a member of the EU
Question Author
the channel Islends are not in the UK or GB they are dependent territories, and wisely, are not in the EU either!
