I have been with First call GB for several years now but luckily not needed them. My car is now 10years old so may start needing them. The breakdown cover is now due but reading the reviews for First call I find they are horrific, couldn't believe them. I just need cover for uk so has anyone any suggestions please?

The man who came found what was needed and went to buy the part. He came back and fitted it. He ended up being with me for about 40 minutes and all I had to pay for was the part he bought. Very good service.
GEM motoring assist are very good - I used them for years.
I don't need them at the moment as my car and bike are both covered by the manufacturers, but I will return to GEM when the free cover is finished.

They are probably all OK until you need them. I think it also depends on where you live. If it's in/near a city then fine but I live in a quieter part of Dorset and have twice had to sit on the roadside alone, once on a dark raining night for 2 hours before the AA turned up (and I think they often franchise it out to local garages rather than send their own dedicated people).
I have been with Britannia Rescue for years and only used them once. I have no complaints.

I agree that the AA and RAC are probably still the best two, although I have used Green Flag and they were very good too.
The best way I've found to keep costs down (always have the full cover insurance) is to play them off against each other.
Year 1 - go to, say AA. Quote as a Newbie could be £80 (costs indicative)
Year 2 - AA renewal quote could be £140, so go to RAC as a Newbie for £80
Year 3 RAC renewal quote could be £140, so go to AA as a 'come back to us client' for £80
Year 4 - etc, etc, etc
It's worked for me

Motability car now so I don't pay. But when I did I alternated between AA and RAC getting the 'new member' discount each time.
Years back you could call them even if you were not a member, then join once they turned up!. I knew a lot of people that used that loophole so you only paid if you actually needed them. Was normally a lot cheaper than calling a garage out to repair the car or tow you home.
