Sorn
Am getting a new (used) car at the weekend which obviously needs to be taxed. First question is (as can't remember) how soon is money taken out of your bank once a DD is set up for road tax?
The current car can't be sold or scrapped until the end of May as a car loan was taken out against it and the loan company currently hold the log book. Last payment is in May which is when log book gets returned. I know you need to complete a SORN as the car won't be used once the new one is here. My question about that is, are you okay to park it in a private car park (i.e. one at a social club which my other half (who owns the car) is a member of). As I think I read if he parked it on the street it should still be taxed and have indurance etc?
Once the SORN is in place, what would happen for either the person who bought it off him or if he took it to a scrap merchant, i.e. the car is then registered as being off the road so how can it be moved by a purchaser or to drive it to the scrap merchant?

The person who buys it has to register it in their name as soon as they buy it and 're-sorn' it in their name. My son bought a car that was SORN , he didn't even move it from the private car park it was on. But the DVLA fined him £250 for not renewing the SORN in his name.

Are you thinking of leaving it parked at the social club until May ? because your Ins prob states that you keep it outside your house, on the drive or street, so IF it was stolen from the car park you'd have problems, esp as there's no tax on the vehicle.
if its on the street it needs to be taxed
If you go to the post office to set the DD up on new car the printed receipt will show the DD date.
If its collected by a scrap firm, they will tow it and give you a receipt to send to dvla to show you're no longer the owner.

Found this out from my son's case.
As soon as the new owner registers the car in their name (which they have to do immediately) that cancels the SORN. If they want to keep it SORN they have to declare SORN again in their own name (which is what my son did not realize he had to do) otherwise they can tax it from the first day of the month they bought it. It still needs to be insured before they can drive it.

If it is SORN insurance is not required. I meant that if someone buys it then they have to insure it before they can drive it home.
Even if it is SORN insurance , though not legally needed is still a good idea. Some one may vandalise it or set it on fire ( both of those have happened to me !) if there is no insurance you have to pay it all your self.
