Private Plate

I managed to write off my bike recently which had a private plate. The V5C with the private plate was sent to my insurance company and they sent me a letter to retain the plate to send to the DVLA. This has been sent together with the DVLA form, and today I've received a new V5C showing a new registration (I was expecting something confirming I have retained the registration so that I can re-register my new bike).

I am completely ignorant of the procedure, never having had to do it before, so my question is, what happens now?

Do I now send the new V5C to the insurance company? Do i have to send a further £80 to the DVLA to re-register the new bike (which seems a little strong given I've already paid them £80 to retain the plate)?

Any help/advice would be appreciated as the DVLA website isn't particularly helpful.

the form is a V317 but if you have already been sent the new V5C then it looks like the Insurance company has already filled that in. I think you'll have to call DVLA to ascertain the current state of play. It costs £80 (which is in fact the fee in advance to put in on a new vehicle) + £25 for retention. You should receive a retention certificate, perhaps that is on the way (V778)
