ok I have looked this up on DVLA and it does indeed say it was registered in 1958 but that format plate started in 1963 so how does this car have one? If it was imported in 1963 it still should have been given a 1958 number as they do appear to know the date of first registration. I'm usually pretty good with car reg numbers but this has got me stumped, cheers

yes but in that article it says its is checked against the database, it still checks you actually are insured even though no paper work is necessary. You still need to be taxed even though there may be no cost and to get taxed you need insurance and indeed, if appropriate and MOT, all are checked on the DVLA Databases. Plod's ANPR system checks all that too.

There is no specific check any more at the time of taxing a car that it is insured.
The reason being that there is now a requirement for all vehicles that are not SORNed to be continuosly insured, and there are checks on this.
There is therefore no need to duplicate this check at time of taxing.
